Ella Cheever Thayer (1849 - 1925) was an American novelist, playwright, and former telegraph operator who work bridged the worlds of technology, gender, and popular fiction in the late nineteenth century, Born in Maine and later based in Massachusetts, Thayer joined the growing ranks of women who entered the telegraph office in the 1870s, mastering the technical and intellectual demans of a profession that placed them at the center of Amercia's communication revolution.
